CASE STUDY

From Spreadsheets to Searchable Scouting: Building a Defensive Game-Planning Tool

Game film review across multiple opponents required hours of manual tracking in spreadsheets that could not scale. I built a full-stack scouting application that turned raw film data into searchable, filterable defensive game plans.

Situation

Game film review across multiple opponents required manual tracking of personnel, formations, and tendencies. Coaches spent hours on spreadsheets that could not scale.

Complication

Without a structured scouting tool, defensive game plans relied on memory and incomplete data. Tendency identification was inconsistent and time-consuming.

Resolution

Built a full-stack scouting application enabling coaches to log opponent tendencies by down, distance, formation, and personnel. Delivered searchable, filterable reports that reduced game-plan preparation time and improved defensive play-calling accuracy.

FOOTBALL TERMINOLOGY

Hover over any term to learn more.

Defensive Coordinator (DC)
The coach responsible for designing and calling the defensive game plan. The DC decides what formations the defence lines up in, what coverages to run against different offences, and makes real-time adjustments during games.
Head Coach
The lead coach responsible for all team decisions, game management, and staff coordination. The head coach sets the culture, manages the full coaching staff, and makes final calls on strategy, personnel, and game-day decisions.
Line Coordinator
A coach who oversees both offensive and defensive line units, responsible for scheme design and personnel development across both groups. A line coordinator role is uncommon and reflects a high level of trust and versatility.
Defensive Line (DLine)
The front line of the defence, typically three or four players who line up directly across from the offensive line. Their job is to pressure the quarterback, disrupt passing plays, and stop running plays at or behind the line of scrimmage.
Offensive Line (OLine)
The front line of the offence; five players whose primary job is to protect the quarterback on passing plays and open running lanes for the running backs. They are the most physically demanding unit on the field.
All-Pro
A post-season honour recognising the best player at each position in the league, as voted by coaches, players, or a selection committee. Being named All-Pro is one of the highest individual accolades a player can earn in a season.
First Team All-Pro
The top-ranked player at their position in the league for that season. First Team All-Pro is the highest individual positional honour.
Second Team All-Pro
The second-ranked player at their position in the league for that season. Still an elite honour: only two players per position receive All-Pro recognition.
Championship Berth
Qualifying for the championship game; making it to the final. A championship berth means the team won every game in the playoffs leading up to the final. Reaching the championship game is the goal of the entire season.
Running Back (RB)
An offensive player who carries the ball on running plays and serves as a receiving option out of the backfield. Running backs need vision, burst, and the ability to block; Ronak coached this position at London Jr. Mustangs.
Kickoff / Punt Return Touchdown
A touchdown scored by a player who catches a kick or punt and runs it back to the end zone without being tackled. These are considered special teams plays and are among the most exciting plays in football; the player who leads the league in this category had an elite season.
1-Seed
The top-ranked team in their conference entering the playoffs: the team with the best regular-season record. Beating the 1-seed in a playoff game is considered a major upset and a strong indicator of a team punching above its weight.
AAA
The highest competitive tier in youth and amateur football. AAA programmes recruit the best available players, operate with full coaching staffs, and run full game schedules with playoffs. Coaching at the AAA level is competitive and demanding.
Special Teams
The units of the team responsible for kicking plays: kickoffs, punts, field goals, and extra points. Special teams also includes the return units that field those kicks. They are often called the 'third phase' of football alongside offence and defence.
Scheme
The overall system or strategy a coach designs for their unit: how the players will line up, what assignments they have, and how the unit responds to what the opponent shows. Installing a scheme means teaching the players their roles within the system.
OSFL
Ontario Summer Football League. The highest level AAA summer football league in Ontario.
OUA
Ontario University Athletics. The governing body for university sports in Ontario.
CFL
Canadian Football League. The professional football league in Canada.
